At 33 years old, I was a CEO, a father of three, running a family business with about 150 employees. I thought in terms of strategy, structure, responsibility and execution. Then my wife asked me for a divorce. I wasn't prepared for what happened next. We gathered our three young children for a family meeting, and I watched the life I knew change in a matter of minutes. Nearly 40 years later, I can still see my 10-year-old son curled up against his mother. That image never left me. For me, divorce felt like receiving an exit interview from my own family. At age 33, I went through my first divorce while building my career and raising three children. The court ordered lifetime spousal support, and I ultimately paid maintenance for 22 years. In today’s dollars, the total financial impact reached into the millions. But this video is not about complaining, blaming the courts, or regretting the checks I wrote. It is about accountability, integrity, sacrifice, and understanding that the consequences of divorce can continue for 20, 30, or even 40 years. I supported two households, became a workaholic, rebuilt my businesses, and kept investing in my children—their education, sports, stability, and future. Today, my children and grandchildren have opportunities because I fulfilled those obligations. Would I have negotiated differently if I knew then what I know now? Absolutely. I would have tried to create my own agreement instead of allowing attorneys and a judge to determine my future. But I kept moving. I got back to work. I lived within my means, saved for difficult times, and honored my responsibilities. Now, nearly 40 years later, I’m living in Vietnam and beginning another chapter of my life.
